Description
Thomson was a power hitter who hit 20+ HR eight times and drove in 100+ runs four times. He is forever known for his pennant winning walk-off home run (aka “the shot heard ’round the world”) in 1951. The New York Giants and Brooklyn Dodgers ended the regular season in a tie and needed to win a three-game playoff to advance to the World Series. The Giants were trailing 4-1 heading to the bottom of the ninth inning in the deciding game three. After scoring to close the gap to a 2-run deficit, Thomson came to the plate with two runners on and first base open. Rather than walk Thomson (the winning run) and pitch to Willie Mays with the potential for an inning-ending double play, the Dodgers pitched to Thomson who hit a three-run walk-off shot. The famous call of “The Giants win the pennant! The Giants win the pennant!” followed, and the rest, as they say, his history.
