1910-12 P2 Sweet Caporal Pins – Christy Mathewson (NM)

$400.00

Description

This tiny pre-war pin was issued by Sweet Caporal cigarettes between 1910 and 1912.  The set features more than 200 pins, thanks to several variations.  Many of the photos used are the same as those in the popular T-205 tobacco card set.

Hall of Fame pitcher Christy Mathewson is among the all-time greats.  His career won-loss record of 373-188 is beyond spectacular.  He won 30+ games four times (including a 37-win season) and 20+ games another nine times.  He led the National League in ERA and strikeouts five times each, including two “triple crown” seasons where he led in wins, strikeouts and ERA.  His 1905 World Series performance is the stuff of legends, leading his New York Giants over the Philadelphia Athletics.  “Matty” would throw three complete-game shutouts in only six days, giving up a paltry 14 hits, walking just one batter, while striking out 27.  In those 27 innings, only one batter even reached third base.

Note: there are a total of 152 Mathewson “small letter” pins graded by PSA.  By comparison, there are 899 total T-205 Mathewson cards graded.

Superb condition, “small letters” variation, grading NM
