Wes Wilson created this poster for Chet Helms and the Family Dog to promote shows featuring the Leaves, the Grass Roots, and the Grateful Dead at the Avalon Ballroom in May of 1966.

The Leaves were the first band to chart the hit “Hey Joe” before disbanding in 1967.  The bass player, Jim Pons, would join the Turtles in 1967 and would later become a member of Frank Zappa’s Mothers of Invention.  The Grass Roots would go through some personnel changes and over time would sell millions of records during their peak years.  This poster is notable as the third act on the bill was the Grateful Dead, making their very first Avalon appearance. The Dead would go on to a remarkably lengthy and successful career.

The condition is NM!
