One of the most recognizable rock posters of all-time combines the incredible work of artist Rick Griffin with one of the era’s most iconic acts, Jimi Hendrix. These shows took place over four days in early 1968 at the Fillmore and Winterland venues in San Francisco, California. Supporting acts included British blues great John Mayall and American blues master, Albert King. Griffin was paying homage here to the Hot Rod artist Von Dutch, who penned the original “Flying Eyeball”.
This poster is so popular it is currently in its 8th edition (it’s also one of the most bootlegged posters out there, ebay beware!). A super high-grade certified first printing recently sold the astronomical sum of $175,000 US. Second printings can run well into the thousands. The third printing was done to promote “Fillmore Ties” and carries a prominent and invasive branding logo. This 4th printing is the best of the post-concert printings, close to the original size, with superior colors and fine detail, printed on a sturdy, smooth, stock. They were printed in 2006 by the Bill Graham Archives LLC in a run of 1,000 posters. Subsequent printings are mostly oversized (21 x 32), with only the 7th printing of 500 posters done in 2020 (has “W 2020” in the lower right-hand margin) being close to the original sizing. An absolute stunner for a good framing job!
